Position: Director of People, Values and Culture

Kapor Enterprises, Inc. (KEI), the umbrella organization that provides support and infrastructure for three highly entrepreneurial, mission- and values-driven organizations—Level Playing Field Institute, Mitchell Kapor Foundation, and XMarks, seeks a Director of People, Values and Culture who has a deep personal affiliation for the values of fairness, social justice, and innovation that are prevalent in the KEI culture. The Director of People, Values and Culture will play a key role in inter-entity coordination, providing people and culture-oriented resources to these various groups and supporting all entities and 45+ staff members to consistently uphold cultural values by finding new and creative ways of institutionalizing and strengthening them throughout the entire organization. This is a full-time, exempt position located in San Francisco, CA.
Responsibilities:
Specifically, the Director's responsibilities include:
Staffing and Volunteers (45%)
- Provide strategic and logistical support to hiring managers through the hiring process, including developing job descriptions, recruiting qualified and diverse candidates, supporting the interview process, conducting salary surveys, and preparing offer letters
- Assist with on-boarding new staff and volunteers with respect to both their tasks and folding them into the existing organizational culture and values
- Develop a robust and strategic volunteer corps to support the diversity of all of the organizations under the KEI umbrella
- Manage external employment agencies, recruiters, and temporary staffing agencies
- Implement and schedule annual 360-degree performance reviews
- Manage workplace diversity, including establishing procedures and sources for encouraging diversity hiring
- Establish and implement clear employment classification systems
Organizational Development and Culture (45%)
- Develop and implement guiding principles and policies to help foster and embed KEI’s unique workplace culture, which reflects the values of the organization and ensures fair treatment of all employees across all entities
- Implement and follow up on the annual employee survey (inclusive of issues regarding staff satisfaction, implementation of organizational values, communication, fairness, etc.)
- Enhance human resources practices to encourage workplace fairness and employee growth and satisfaction, working with the on-staff Ombudsperson
- Provide resources to managers (training, etc.) to help managers grow in their ability to professionally develop their staff
- Work with other KEI staff to ensure employee safety, welfare, and wellness and foster a culture of respect
- Oversee the development of a customized, interactive management training program, focusing on values-based management, using case studies and engaging media (e.g. animation, video vignettes)
- Opportunity to work on projects with the workplace programs and/or hidden bias research teams at Level Playing Field Institute; these might include helping to design and/or carryout groundbreaking research on identifying and mitigating hidden biases and hidden barriers, developing training and/or media products for corporate clients
- Review and develop entities’ policies and procedures, including termination, employee grievance, and compensation policies, ensuring they are up-to-date (but not overly bureaucratic or oriented to risk management) and posted on the web-based employee portal
- Oversee employment law compliance, balancing this with an overriding commitment to creating a fair, inclusive and respectful workplace
- Analyze effectiveness of all human resources efforts
- Work directly with Human Resource Administrator who manages day-to-day activity of all benefits administration including, medical/dental, vision, life insurance, 401K, flex plans, and disability insurance
- Set benefits strategy and provide oversight of the benefits programs and relationships with vendors
- Ongoing review of the compensation and benefits programs and research market practice to ensure the organization’s ability to recruit and retain top employees
Strong candidates will have 10+ years of HR generalist experience and be personally and professionally aligned with KEI’s unique, values-driven culture, which is highly attuned to social justice and presumes that fairness is central to any definition of corporate success. Other desired experiences and qualifications include:
- Experience providing HR support in fast-paced environment (non-profit and/or start-up sourcing background a plus)
- Experience crafting alternative approaches to complaints and disputes in a work environment (e.g. Ombudsperson, mediation, informal channels, etc.)
- Organizational development, consultative, and coaching skills
- Sophisticated understanding of diversity issues and subtle barriers to inclusion with a keen focus on fairness above bureaucracy
- Extreme confidentiality regarding sensitive hiring materials and employee information
- Impeccable writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Positive, approachable, dependable, and flexible to meet changing organizational needs
