Success Charter Network, a charter management organization (CMO) located in Central Harlem, seeks extraordinary Leadership Residents. Success Charter Network is an ambitious charter management network of four high-performing charter schools in New York City. Eva Moskowitz, former New York City Councilmember and Education Committee Chair, is the CEO and founder of the organization. Part of the founders' larger mission in reforming the educational landscape is to continue to replicate the current model and open an additional 40 schools over the next decade that provide access to high-quality education to children throughout New York City.

In 2006, Success Charter Network launched its flagship school, Harlem Success Academy Charter School. With the opening of three additional schools in 2008, they are currently serving more than 1,500 students. They plan to launch three new schools in the fall of 2010 that provide academically rigorous and well-rounded instruction in historically underserved communities. Ideal candidates for the Leadership Residents role are dynamic, results-oriented and relentless urban educators. This unique opportunity will prepare the Leadership Resident to open a school in 2011 by equipping him/her with the skills necessary to launch and lead a school.

Goals for the Leadership Residency:
The Leadership Residency program is designed to provide training, resources and coaching to aspiring school leaders to minimize the challenges of school startup and to enhance the success of recently launched schools.

There are several goals for Leadership Residents:

  • Prepare the Leadership Resident to become a Principal by learning the Harlem Success model
  • Extend the Leadership Resident’s current portfolio of skills needed to be effective
  • Provide coaching and feedback during the year to plan for the launch of a new school
Responsibilities:
  • Teach in his/her area of expertise
  • Assist in overseeing curriculum development
  • Observe teachers/associate teachers and follow up with valuable written/oral feedback to drive their continuous improvement
  • Support and maintain a disciplined school culture of scholarship
  • Review and use student achievement data to drive instruction
  • Manage specific instructional initiatives (e.g., Balanced literacy tutoring)
  • Lead grade team and school-wide meetings
  • Collaborate with network staff about scheduling, staff recruitment, data analysis, and procurement
  • Lead professional development sessions
  • Manage teachers’ administrative duties, and school-wide administrative tasks (e.g., report cards, classroom libraries)
  • Oversee the school’s special initiatives
  • Participate in family meetings
  • Provide supervision to students during arrival, dismissal, breakfast and lunch
  • Manage teachers’ roles during family events
  • Plan, lead, and emcee Scholar Assemblies
  • Develop school start-up plan and toolkit

Qualifications:

  • Record of achievement as an elementary or middle school teacher for 3+ years, preferably as an urban educator
  • Dedication and passion for the school’s unique vision, professional standards, and values
  • High level of organization and resourcefulness, with a keen ability to be on top of the day-to-day management of a school
  • Strong ability to multi-task
  • Ability to prioritize effectively to accomplish the most important tasks without losing sight of other details
  • Relentlessness in the pursuit of excellence and a “whatever it takes” attitude
  • Firm grasp of curriculum and an unwavering commitment to data-driven instruction
  • Exemplary oral and written communication skills with the ability to inspire others to meet their goals
  • Sophisticated analytical abilities
  • Humble, reflective, and willing to continually improve
  • Record of top educational performance in undergraduate degree (Master’s preferred)
  • Stamina to handle long days and the intensity required to open a new high-performing charter school
Compensation:
Competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
