Vice President of Communications
The Global Fund for Women, an internationally renowned nonprofit grant-making foundation that advances women’s human rights worldwide, seeks a Vice President of Communications to join its senior leadership team. This newly created position will be responsible for crafting and guiding the organization’s overarching communications strategy, working with other members of the senior leadership team on articulating the organization’s mission to diverse audiences around the world. This role will work with Program and Development leadership to ensure that all communications efforts align with programmatic and fundraising goals. S/he will provide strategic guidance and leadership to all communication activities, and will manage a growing and diverse team of in-house communications professionals and consultants, including a professional public relations firm. The ideal candidate will have proven success in creating and implementing effective communications strategy in a national nonprofit or NGO setting, using established and new media tools to grow and share a powerful message. S/he must demonstrate a passion, commitment and respect for the work of the Global Fund.
The Vice President of Communications will report to the Chief Operations Officer. In addition, the Vice President of Communications will work directly with the President and CEO on global communication strategies. S/he will also interact frequently with members of the Global Fund Board of Directors on major communication activities. This position is located in San Francisco, California.
Responsibilities:
•Design, articulate, and implement the organization’s short and long-term communication strategies.
•Present with commitment and passion the Global Fund's vision, mission, values and goals to a variety of audiences including the Global Fund’s expanding donor community.
•Provide a compelling vision for the communications mission of the organization.
•Refine and implement an effective communications strategy to support the Global Fund’s international work. This includes developing and expanding the Global Fund’s media and marketing strategies, as well as its public education function.
•Establish a communications advisory committee that can communication committee of the Board of Directors and facilitate facilitate Board engagement in communication efforts.
•Lead, manage, and mentor a diverse and talented team of communications professionals, including staff and consultants, to perform at the highest levels of excellence.
•Develop new and innovative strategies to raise public awareness and stimulate action around key women’s rights issues consistent with the Global Fund’s values and principles.
•Design strategies to educate donors and the general public, raise the visibility of grantees, and create linkages between donors and grantees.
•Develop, oversee and manage an annual budget for the communication function.
Qualifications:
•Demonstrated success in developing a sophisticated communication strategy.
•7-10+ years of evolving leadership experience.
•Extensive network of media relations’ contacts.
•Significant management experience leading diverse teams.
•Experience in public affairs, advocacy or crisis communications.
•Proven track record of success in creating effective communication plans to inform, inspire and engage the different audiences.
•Success in leveraging new and traditional media tools, including but not limited to op-eds, viral marketing campaigns, social networks, cause marketing, and more.
•Fluency in more than one language and experience living and working internationally preferred.
•Passionate commitment to a world of equality and social justice as well as to women’s rights.
•Ability to articulate with passion, commitment and respect the complex concepts involved in the Global Fund’s important work.
•Understanding of non-profit organizations and the flexibility required to effectively participate in an inclusive model of decision making.
•Fluency in more than one language and experience living and working internationally preferred.
