Director/Associate Director of New Business Development


The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation seeks a Director/Associate Director for New Business Development to identify, evaluate, and develop new investments in organizations and products/services that have the potential to significantly impact and improve the performance of K-12 public education.  This role reports to the COO and is part of the Foundation's policy and business development work.  Current grantees/projects in the Operating Environment portfolio include Strong American Schools, the Center for American Progress, Ed Sector and Ed Trust. This position is based in Los Angeles, California.


Responsibilities:

Seek and develop new grant opportunities in previously undeveloped areas that are consistent with the Foundation’s mission.

Work with early stage organizations to develop initial business plan ideas.

Analyze proposals and business plans, design programs and help develop and approve budgets.

Work to capitalize on grant investments that have local, state, or federal education policy implications.

Work with evaluators to develop and implement assessment mechanisms for each grant in the New Business Development portfolio.

Present investment recommendations to the Foundation.

Maintain a strong relationship with grantees and provide management support to grantees throughout the grant development and implementation process.

Represent the Foundation at relevant conferences, meetings, networking events, and other engagements.

Be current on leading challenges, issues, new thinking and personalities in the major urban school districts that are relevant to achieving the mission of the Foundation.


Qualifications:

Five to ten years of professional work experience – relevant experiences might include management consulting, product management, investing, and/or managing projects across functional areas or organizations.

Strong analytical, business development and managerial capabilities. Capacity to understand small or large, complex organizations and the ability to conceptualize, conceive, manage, implement, and evaluate multiple large-scale projects.

Superb writing and communication skills.

Energy and perseverance necessary to find opportunities for high-leverage within portfolio organizations.

Judgment and organizational savvy required to assess the probability of success of the ideas, the people, and the organizations to implement them.

Ability to work effectively with a range of people, including senior-level superintendents and corporate executives and grantees.

Experience working in a start-up, entrepreneurial, and/or fast-paced environment. An entrepreneurial spirit a must.

Personal presence and communication skills to represent the Foundation in diverse forums and organizational relationships.

Demonstrated personal commitment to the cause of improving urban public education systems, together with determination to find creative ways to improve upon traditional structures.

Interest or experience in public policy and politics is preferred.

Minimum of an advanced degree (e.g. MBA, MPP, JD).

Willingness to travel up to 30% domestically.

Management and operating style suited to work in a small-office setting with limited support staff, where teamwork among peers in highly valued.

Ability to work effectively under pressure and to handle a heavy, diverse workload.

A self-starter.  Highly motivated.


Compensation and Benefits:

Compensation is commensurate with skills and experience.
